Spring Crops at Maple Spring Gardens
Cedar Grove, NC

Brassica crops and cover crops

Layers of green: The back field at Maple Spring Gardens, where farmer Ken Dawson grows broccoli, cabbage, and kale. A rye cover crop has been planted in between the crop rows, and a cover crop of rye, hairy vetch, and crimson clover is on the left. The farm's high tunnels - also called hoophouses - can be seen in the background.

Employee Stuart White trellises newly planted cucumbers in the hoophouse. The cucumbers are surrounded by rows of tomatoes. The high tunnels provide protection from the cool temperatures and allow crops to be planted and harvested earlier. Ken also plants cucumbers and tomatoes in the field for a continuous harvest throughout the season.
