Farm Planning and Recordkeeping

Planning Spreadsheets

These Microsoft Excel spreadsheets were developed by Joel Gruver, Ph.D candidate at NC State University and former farm manager for the organic demonstration farm at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) in Goldsboro, NC. Joel developed these tools to help plan for the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program at CEFS. If you use these spreadsheets, please email Joel with feedback as to their usefulness.

Note: Open and save these spreadsheets to your computer, then you can enlarge them for better viewing and enter data from your own farm. These sheets are meant to be adapted to fit your own operation. You may have different growing conditions and different planting times, yields, number of CSA shares, etc.

    • Number of weeks to harvest (for scheduling seeding and planting dates)
    • Starting transplants
    • Setting transplants into the field
    • Direct seeding
  1. Planning Spreadsheets for CSA and Farmers' Markets
    • Produce availability calendar for 34 vegetable crops
    • Calendar for designing CSA "full share" composition
    • Calendar for designing CSA "half share" composition
    • Calendars for farmers' markets
    • Farm totals = CSA shares + farmers' markets produce
    • Field production information related to total farm sale goals; this sheet calculates:
      • number of plantings
      • number of harvests
      • total row feet needed
      • total amount of seed needed
      • row feet needed per planting
      • nitrogen needed per planting
      • potassium needed per planting
      • value ($) per crop
      • total acreage
      • gross revenue
    • Yield and production data
