ADMINISTRATIVE MESSAGES & UPDATES

Extra Leave Approved for Hurricane-Affected Employees
The University of North Carolina system has been authorized to offer up to 80 hours of “Other Management Approved Leave” to employees who have spent or need to spend time off handling damage to their homes caused by Hurricane Matthew. Extension employees can follow the link to find more details and a request form.

GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS / DISASTER RELIEF

USDA Approves Natural Disaster Designations for 39 N.C. Counties
Farmers in the eligible counties have eight months to apply for loans from from USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), which can help farm families with their recovery efforts.

Disaster SNAP Benefits Approved for 31 N.C. Counties
USDA has extended Disaster SNAP program benefits to an additional 13 counties, bringing the total to 31 N.C. counties. The additional counties include: Bertie, Craven, Edgecombe, Gates, Lee, Martin, Moore, Nash, Onslow, Pitt, Wake, Washington and Wilson. Applications will be accepted October 27-31.

Emergency Loan Program Activated for Small Businesses
A group of small business support organizations, including the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center, has activated the N.C. Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program in response to Hurricane Matthew. The program will provide short-term, interest-free loans to small businesses that experienced physical or economic damage during the storm and recovery efforts.

New Videos Assist Growers with FSA Disaster Programs
NC State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, working in partnership with N.C. Farm Bureau and USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), have developed a series of videos to assist agents and growers with navigating and applying for FSA’s disaster assistance programs.

Many trees were damaged or killed by Hurricane Matthew. Dr. Lucy Bradley, Extension specialist in urban horticulture, developed this guide to help people explore options and make decisions regarding damaged trees.
