1/28/2019 – On March 16 and 17, 2019, the fourth annual South Atlantic Hops Conference will be held in Asheville, NC. We have some great speakers lined up and here is an introduction to a few of them. Dr. Rob Sirrine, Community Food Systems Educator, Center for Regional Food Systems, Michigan State University. Rob’s keynote presentation will be “Growing the Michigan Hops Industry” He will also give a presentation on “Scaling Up Your Operation” and another with VA hops grower, Justen Dick, on “Handling Hops After Harvest”. Rob was one of the university pioneers who helped the Michigan hops industry get started and now offers statewide leadership for hops education, outreach and research in Michigan. His vision, leadership, and winning personality has also helped to grow the eastern hops industry through his efforts to bring researchers across the region together as the Great Lakes Hops Working Group. He is located at the Leelanau County Extension Office in Suttons Bay, MI. You can read more about Rob and his program on his webpage.

Erin Lizotte, Michigan State University, Cadillac, MI. Erin will speak on “Controlling Diseases on Hops” and “Controlling Insect Pests on Hops”. Erin is an IPM educator and has been very involved in growing the Michigan hops industry. Her leadership in coordinating conferences, getting hops researchers from non-traditional areas working together in the Great Lakes Hops Working Group, and other activities have been invaluable in growing our young industry. Dr. Holly Scoggins, Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture, Virginia Tech University. Holly will speak on “How to Grow Hops in the South Atlantic: the Basics (for beginners)” and will share research updates. Holly was already well-known for her expertise on ornamentals and urban horticulture, but a few years back was looking for a new challenge and became interested in hops. She quickly developed solid research and extension program on hops and has worked tirelessly to help grow the South Atlantic industry. You can read more about Holly and her program on her webpage.

Bill Chioffi, Botanical Consulting International, Asheville, NC. Bill will present on “Providing Hops to the Medicinal Herb Market”. Bill has been an international buyer of medicinal herbs for a long time, most recently with Gaia Herbs. He has a wealth of information on sourcing natural products, growing, and what a grower needs to know to supply raw materials to a company. Bill has moved on to new businesses.
