Macon County Youth Attended NC Junior Beef Roundup
This past weekend 144 youths participated in the 2020 NC Junior Beef Roundup held at the WNC Agricultural Center in Fletcher, NC. Of those 144 youths, 18 of them were from Macon County. Macon County 4-H had two 4-H Steers shown and other Macon County 4-H’ers showed their own heifers and steers. All the youth worked really hard and did a wonderful job.
Check-in began on Friday, August 7, starting at 12:00 noon. On Friday, the kids washed and groomed their livestock getting them ready for the show on Saturday. 4-H’ers from Macon County showed great team work, working together washing and drying their livestock.
Steer weigh-in began at 7:30 Saturday morning. Our youth were up bright and early Saturday morning, getting their steers weighed in and their steers and heifers washed, dried, blown off, and sheened to compete. First Show began at 10:00 a.m. with the Breed heifer show. Breeds showed in the following order: Shorthorn, Simmental, %Simmental, Angus, Commercial, Gelbvieh, Limousin, Hereford, Red Angus, All other Breeds. The Steer Show followed the Heifer Show.
Sunday morning began with a 7:30 a.m. Devotional. Immediately following the devotional service Showmanship Classes began at 8:30. The order of showing was Pee-Wee, Senior, Intermediate, Junior, and Novice.
N.C. Cooperative Extension, Macon County Center and Macon County 4-H is very proud of the youth from Macon County. They all worked so hard and did a great job showing and representing Macon County.
The show was in compliance with current North Carolina guidance from Governor Roy Coopers Executive Order 141, Section 9, CDC guidelines, and NC State Extension Guidelines. Everyone that attended and participated wore a mask, except when they were in their own cattle stalls. The Livestock show was live-streamed so family members and friends could watch the show without being at the Ag Center.
