The 2022 Candace Norman Youth and Adult Service Awards were presented during the opening ceremonies of the NC State 4-H Horse Show on July 8. These awards are sponsored by the North Central District, in memory of long-time NC 4-H Horse Program and Orange county volunteer, Candance Norman. They are given annually to a 4-H youth member and adult volunteer who exhibit true dedication to and embodies all the characteristics and morals of 4-H – a well-rounded person who strives to make the community a better place through example and leadership.

2022 Candace Norman Service Award Winners (L to R): Mary Hunt, Adult Award Winner; Faith Waelz, Youth Award Winner; Morgan Maness, North Central District Agent Advisor

Youth Award Winner: Faith Waelz, Gaston County
Faith has been an active 4-H member in Gaston County for the past 11 years. According to her Extension director, Faith’s passion for service is what makes her stand out. She never misses a service opportunity with her club. She coaches younger 4-H’ers showmanship skills, which resulted in all of them placing in showmanship at the qualifying show. During the pandemic, Faith organized horse visits to nursing home patients. She also provided 4-H-based curriculum projects to a local Elementary school and even brought her horse to the school to encourage goal setting with fourth-grade students. Faith has been a very active and successful fundraiser for the American Heart Association Beach ride.

Adult Award Winner: Mary Hunt, Guilford County
Mary Hunt has been a Guilford County 4-H volunteer for the past 39 years. In the words of former NCSU Extension Horse Technician Kim Foushee, “Her unselfish demeanor and knowledge are always freely given. Mary’s thoughtfulness always encompasses the needs of the youth or horse. Her many hours dedicated to running the dressage division at the State Show have enabled the division to grow and reflect the industry standards. Her willingness to serve in any capacity, anywhere in the state, is unmatched. Mary makes it happen no matter if she is inconvenienced or tired.” She is currently working in the footsteps of Candace Norman, serving as the North Central District secretary. The recognition of Mary Hunt’s devout service to the NC 4-H Horse Program is long past due.
