The 11th annual On-Site Wastewater Conference was designed to gring you information on the ways on-site domestic sewage treatment systems work and how to manage them to ensure public and environmental health. The Planning Committee selected several nationally-known speakers well versed in on-site system performance and renovation. Additionally, local speakers presented practical information that has a direct bearing on your job.

As we learned form last year’s conference, advanced systems are here to stay. Several recently approved systems will be discussed at this conference. Although these recent advances have increased the options available to us, the soil remains as the major treatment unit in on-site wastewater treatment. With this in mind, we devoted a major portion of this conference to the soil as a treatment unit. As new systems are approved and problem systems are corrected, management and public education become critical. One of the goals of the planning committee was to present information to you regarding management options, system design criteria, and educational programs which improve the overall perfomance of on-site systems, and which maximize resource potential.

Invited speakers included national experts such as Anish Jantrania, Virginia Office of Environmental Health Services; George Loomis, University of Rhode Island; Dr. David Pask, Small Flows Clearinghouse; Dr. Moye Rutledge, University of Arkansas; and Dr. Jerry Tyler, University of Wisconsin who have investigated the performance and environmental aspects of many on-site systems. Additional North Carolina speakers included Environmental Health Specialists, Professional Engineers, and Certified Subsurface System Operators, Soil Scientists, and educators.

The success of the Manufacturers’ Exhibit last year prompted the Planning Committee to repeat this important aspect of teh conference. The Manufacturers’ exhibition allowed you to make one-on-one contact with people who can help you best utilize the various technologies that are available to you.
The Planning Committee also developed a poster display of research and educational materials that may be of interest. As with the Manufacturers’ Exhibit, these displays allowed the conferees opportunities for one-on-0ne discussion with the presenter.
