The Chatham County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension will offer a Forestry Pest Management Workshop as part of its Enhancing Sustainability Series on Thursday June 20 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. at the Chatham County Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro.
The workshop will be presented by Dr. Kelly Oten, Forest Health Monitoring Coordinator with the N.C. Forest Service. As part of her duties, Dr. Oten surveys for and tracks invasive pests, manages the Ash Protection Program, partners with universities and government agencies in research, and does field diagnostics of forest health issues. She is also adjunct faculty at N.C. State University where she teaches Forest Entomology. Topics include Native Forest Pest Insects and Invasive Forest Pest Insects. Dr. Oten will discuss pest identification, life cycle, range, and integrated pest management. This workshop will provide 2 continuing certification credits for private and commercial pesticide applicators in classes G, N, D, and X. The workshop is FREE but advance registration is required. Those wishing to be trained as PLT Facilitators for the Early Childhood materials (only) may pay an additional $10 for the facilitator training on Tuesday, August 13. All PLT Facilitators are required to host and lead a PLT workshop at least once a year (we encourage co-facilitation). Facilitator training will take place from 9am - 2pm on Tuesday, August 13, at the same location. You must select this additional option in the registration system.

This workshop will focus on Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood. Please prepare to be outside for a portion of the workshop, and bring your lunch.

Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an interdisciplinary environmental education program designed for educators of ANY background. Participants in this professional learning experience will:
  • Receive PLT’s Environmental Experiences for Early Childhood Activity Guide and accompanying music CD
  • Identify new hands-on activities to share with learners based on the five senses, the seasons of the year, and trees in your neighborhood
  • Engage learners through song, dance, exploration, and play
  • Discover how to incorporate literature into your early childhood EE programs
  • Create a plan to infuse early childhood programming with environmental education learning experiences
  • Earn CEUs, in-service credit, or NC Environmental Education Certification hours (Criteria I)


Pre-registration is required. There is a $20 cost for this workshop ($30 if you are doing the facilitator training). PLT Activity Guides are provided at no additional costs through support from the NC Forestry Association.

Please make a personal commitment to attend to ensure there are enough materials and space for everyone. Cancellations made by the registration deadline will receive a $10 refund. Cancellations after this date will not receive a refund.
