Making the Most of Your Mobile
Setting Up Emergency Contacts & Your Medical ID
It’s easy to assume that an accident or medical emergency won’t happen to you or your loved ones, but the reality is that unexpected situations can arise at any time. Taking a few simple steps now can make a meaningful difference in an emergency. Set aside a few minutes to add emergency contacts to your or your loved one’s mobile device, it’s a quick action that can help ensure you receive timely assistance when it matters most.
iPhone Instructions
On Apple devices, emergency contacts are added in the Health App and can be made accessible from the lock screen for first responders. The Health App icon is a white square with a pink heart in the upper right corner.
Adding your emergency contact:
- Open the Health app
- Tap your profile picture (top right).
- Select Medical ID.
- Tap Edit (top right).
- Scroll to Emergency Contacts.
- Tap + Add emergency contact.
- Choose a contact and select their relationship.
- Tap Done.
Make sure “Show When Locked” is turned ON so first responders can access it.
Emergency contacts will be notified if you enable the Emergency SOS.
Medical ID:
- Open the Health app
- Tap your profile picture
- Select Medical ID
- Edit to fill out health details such as medical conditions or medications (you can also add Emergency Contacts on this screen)
Make sure "Show When Locked" is turned ON so first responders can access it.

Android Instructions
On most Android devices emergency contacts are added in the Settings App under the Safety & Emergency screen. The Settings App is a usually a dark grey gear/cog
Adding your emergency contact:
- Open Settings
- Tap Safety & Emergency (or About phone → Emergency information)
- Tap Emergency contacts
- Tap Add contact
Select one or more contacts
- For alternative devices with a Lock Screen Access Setup:
- Go to Settings → Lock Screen
- Tap Contact information or Emergency information
- Add details and contacts
Medical ID:
- Go to Settings
- Select Safety & emergency (or Emergency Information)
- Tap Emergency contacts and Medical info to add your medical conditions or medication

Remember to choose your emergency contacts carefully, selecting individuals who are likely to respond quickly. Be sure to inform them that they have been listed as your emergency contacts. If possible, include at least one local contact. It is also important to keep your medical information up to date, including details such as allergies and medications. This information can be stored on your phone and accessed in an emergency.
Locating a Lost or Stolen Phone
Being able to quickly locate a lost or stolen phone can save you time, money, and the loss of valuable personal information. Modern smartphones contain so much of our personal data and sensitive information such as contacts, photos, financial information, passwords, and access to personal accounts. You can use built in location services to help you quickly find misplaced devices or remotely lock it down to protect your information. It just takes a few minutes to enable these features before an emergency occurs so that recovering your phone is faster and your information is protected.
iPhone Instructions
Enable Location Services
- Access the Settings app
- Select your name at the top of the screen
- Select the "Find My" tab from the menu options
- Ensure the "Find My iPhone" option at the top of the page is set to ON
If your device is lost, visit icloud.com/find or use the Find My app on an alternate Apple device. If you cannot find your device in an appropriate amount of time, make sure to mark it as lost to protect your personal data. When in Lost Mode, your phone is locked down and your passcode, payment cards, and passes you may use with Apple Pay are suspended. You can also have your device display a phone number and message so if someone finds it they can get in touch with you.
Marking Your Phone as Lost
- Sign in to iCloud.com/find with your Apple ID. If asked for a verification code, select the Find Devices button instead
- Select the device you wish to mark as lost from the list of devices provided
- Select Mark As Lost

Android Instructions
Enable Location Services
- Access the Settings app
- Select your name at the top of the screen
- Select the "Find My Mobile" tab from the menu (this may require scrolling down)
- Make sure the "Allow this phone to be found" is toggled ON
If your device is lost, visit android.com/find and sign in to your account. Select the device in question from the list of devices available. If you have enabled the option to also find your device if offline, the app Find Hub will display the last known location when it was online. If you cannot find your device in an appropriate amount of time, make sure to mark it as lost to protect your personal data. Marking your phone as lost will immediately remove your credit and debit cards from Google Wallet to prevent unauthorized uses. You can also have your device display a phone number and message so if someone finds it they can get in touch with you.

- Open the Find My Device app on any other Android phone or tablet. Alternatively, go to the Google Find My Device portal from a web browser.
- Log into your Google account or sign in as a guest if using another's device
- Select the correct device from the options listed on the top left or the map list
- Select the "Lock", "Mark as Lost", or "Secure Device" option and follow the instructions in the prompts
- Click "Secure Device" or "Mark as Lost" to confirm

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
Setting up Two-Factor Authentication for your accounts adds an extra layer of security and protection by requesting a second form of verification on top of your password. This means that even if someone steals or guesses your password, they cannot access your account without the second verification step, such as Face ID or fingerprint recognition in addition to your passcode. Enabling 2FA helps to protect your information and reduces the risk of identify theft. It is one of the simplest and most effective ways to keep your accounts and personal information secure.

Turn on Two-Factor Authentication
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top, then select the menu item "Sign-In & Security"
- Select "Two-Factor Authentication"
- Make sure that "Turn On Two-Factor Authentication" is set to ON
- Next, add a trusted phone number to receive verification codes
- Apple will send a 6-digit code to the number via text message or automated call for verification. Enter the provided code to complete the setup

Android Instructions
There are several options through Google to set up 2FA.
Google Authenticator App
- Open the Google Play Store on your device
- Download and install the Google Authenticator app
- Open the app and follow the prompts to finish setup
Enable 2FA on Your Google Account
- Open the Settings app on your mobile device
- Scroll to "Google", then select "Manage your Google Account"
- Next, select the "Security" tab from the menu at the top of the screen
- Under the "How to sign into Google section, select the option for 2-Step Verification
- Select the option to "Get Started" and follow the provided prompts
- After signing into your account again, select your preferred second step verification, such as the Authenticator App, Text Message/SMS, or passkey

Enable Severe Weather Alerts
Receiving timely alerts and warnings of severe weather conditions can help you take the steps necessary to remain safe. Enabling these alerts on your mobile device can notify you of threats such as tornados, hurricanes, flash floods, severe thunderstorms, and other dangerous weather events that may impact your area. These early warnings can allow you valuable time to take action, seek shelter, protect your family, and make informed decisions.
iPhone Instructions
Enabling Severe Weather Alerts
- Open the Settings app
- Select "Notifications"
- Scroll down and tap on "Weather"
- Make sure "Allow Notifications" is turned ON
- Confirm the cities you want to monitor are added in the Weather app
- In "Notifications", scroll to the bottom and tap "Weather Notification Settings"
- Enable notifications for "Severe Weather" and "Next-Hour Precipitation" for the locations where you want updates and alerts
- For additional timely notifications, in the Settings menu, scroll to the bottom to find Government Alerts and ensure Emergency Alerts and Public Safety Alerts are toggled on

Android Instructions
Enabling Severe Weather Alerts
- Open the Settings app on your device
- Scroll down and select "Safety and emergency"
- Select "Wireless Emergency Alerts"
- Make sure "Allow alerts" is turned ON
- Ensure you have severe weather alerts enabled
- In the "Wireless Emergency Alerts menu, ensure Extreme threats, Public safety messages, and other desired alerts are toggled to ON. Scroll down the same menu to select Alert preferences or to request notifications in Spanish
