For poultry owners who plan to hatch and raise their own chicks, early disease prevention is one of the most important steps in building a healthy flock. To help local producers gain this critical skill, the Chatham County Center of Cooperative Extension is offering a free, hands-on Chick Vaccination Workshop.
This one-hour training will focus on properly vaccinating newly hatched chicks against Marek's disease, a highly contagious viral disease that can cause tumors, paralysis, and significant losses in poultry flocks. Because chicks must be vaccinated shortly after hatching to be protected, learning the correct handling and administration techniques is essential for anyone planning to hatch their own birds.
The workshop will begin with a short educational briefing covering vaccine storage, preparation, and best practices for administration. Participants will then move into guided, hands-on practice using live chicks so they can build confidence in the process and leave with practical experience.
Space is limited to 25 participants to ensure each attendee receives individualized instruction. The workshop is offered free of charge, but registration is required.
